Neck Training Methods
Six ways to load a neck, and what each one is actually for.
There are six ways to load a neck: harness work, weighted isometric holds, elastic resistance, fixed-path machines, bodyweight bridging, and hand-applied resistance. A head harness is the right answer for almost everyone, because it is what nearly every published protocol actually used and the only option that loads three directions with a number you can add to. Bridging is advanced regardless of how simple it looks, and hand resistance is a warm-up and a rotation tool rather than a method. No trial has compared any of these against another except bands versus weighted headgear.
The methods
Harness Training
External load transferred to the skull by strap. The oldest purpose-built method, patented 1891, the most versatile, and the one most published protocols used. The default answer.
Isometrics
Force without movement. A contraction type, not a method — every protocol that produced gains loaded its holds with a harness. In print since 1908.
Manual Resistance
A hand as the load. Unmeasurable and unrepeatable, so not a programme — but the only practical way to load rotation, and useful for warming up.
Band Training
Ascending resistance. A reasonable travel option with a measured ceiling — roughly the equivalent of one G.
Machine Training
Fixed-path loading through a pad. The only modality shown by EMG to reproduce high-G muscle activation, and it cannot train rotation.
Bridging
Bodyweight through the cervical spine in extension. Requires no equipment, which is not the same as requiring no preparation.
Choosing between them
If you have never trained your neck: get a head harness and run weighted isometric holds three times a week. That is what the published protocols did, and it is the only starting point that gives you a load you can add to in week three. See start here.

If you have been using bands for more than about six weeks: you are probably at the ceiling. The measured evidence on this is unusually clear — see elastic resistance.
If rotation is missing from your programme: it almost certainly is, and manual resistance is the answer for most people. Almost nothing else loads it.
If you wrestle or grapple: bridging is a competitive skill and you will learn it regardless. Build it deliberately rather than discovering it.
If you want one thing to do forever: a harness. Adherence — not programming — is the binding constraint in every long-duration study on record, and the thing people actually keep doing is the thing that takes ninety seconds to set up, packs into a gym bag, and shows them a number going up.
What no method does
None of them is proven superior. The only device comparison in the published literature is weighted headgear against elastic bands, in aviation cadets, over twelve weeks. Harnesses versus machines, machines versus ring devices, anything versus manual resistance — none of these studies exists.
Where this site expresses a preference between methods, it is reasoning from mechanics and from what a method can and cannot load, not reporting an outcome trial. Those pages say so.
The dosage that applies to all of them
Two to three sessions a week. Eight to fifteen repetitions for dynamic work, five to forty seconds for isometric holds. Stop short of failure. Progress load in the smallest increment available — the best-evidenced protocol advanced half a kilogram at a time to a ceiling of three over twelve weeks.
